6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
First Grade students are developing their enthusiasm for reading. As they continue to grow as readers, we are inviting all 14-15 first grade families to be a part of a special night about reading at home with your child. At Literacy Night, we will discuss just-right books, reading strategies, and introduce the take-home library. You might even see some super reading heroes in action!

Butterflies in the classroom

Each year the first grade students watch caterpillars turn into Painted Lady Butterflies. This year the caterpillars came Friday, Sept. 12 and they are already in chrysalis form. So, we took time today to read about butterflies during partner reading.

Mealworms

We have been looking at mealworms these past two weeks. Some of our mealworms have turned into pupas!!! Each time we investigate we use our science notebooks to journal about what we observe. Now to find out what the mealworms will turn into.(beetles)

Community Teams

We met on Friday for our first Multi-age Community Teams. These are teams that we use to build relationships across grade levels and we will use these teams for field day in May. Our theme this year is ways we Express Ourselves. Some like to draw, paint, dance, play football, soccer, or build with legos.
Dr. Martin and Mrs. Hwande like to express themselves through dance.

Students made posters showing how they express themselves.

Number Bonds

Number bonds is a way for students  to visualize numbers and decompose/compose numbers.

Being able to visualize numbers is the key, and giving the students a graphic like the number bound is one way to help them do this.

Another way for students to think about numbers is to play “Bears in a Cave” ........"If I have 9 bears (cubes or beans)  and 6 are outside the cup (cave) how many went in to the cup/cave? "(3)
